What's the Difference? Backyard Breeders vs. Ethical Breeders

Recently, I had the chance to participate in a Masterclass for breeders. Before I began raising puppies, I never realized the extent of what is involved in the entire process of raising them! It requires a commitment to ongoing education, an openness to adapting to new methods, and a drive for constant improvement.
Which brings me to a fundamental question that came up in the class. What is the definition of a backyard breeder? I thought "Wait a minute! I raise puppies in my home, and they play in my back yard. Am I a backyard breeder?"
What is a Backyard Breeder?
Here are some key distinctions. Backyard breeders are typically hobbyists or individuals who breed dogs without proper knowledge, facilities, or commitment to the breed's welfare.
We've all seen it: While attending the local Art in the Park there is a sign that says, "Puppies for Sale!" You walk over and see a pile of adorable puppies (what puppies aren't adorable?!).
"What breed are they?" you ask.
"Well, we're not entirely sure," the seller admits with a shrug. "We don't know who the father is."
Hmmm….no knowledge of the father means no understanding of half the puppies' genetic makeup. What traits might they inherit? What potential health issues could be lurking beneath those adorable exteriors?
"What about the puppies' temperament? Any idea what they might be like as they grow up?" you ask.
Again, the answer is vague. "The mom's pretty friendly, but we don't have a clue about the dad's personality."
Not a good sign! A dog's temperament is crucial, especially when bringing one into a family home. Will these puppies grow to be gentle companions or develop behavioral issues due to unknown genetic factors? Then you think about the years ahead - will this puppy fit into your family's lifestyle? Will it have the temperament you need? Most importantly, will it be healthy, or are you setting yourself up for heartache and expensive vet bills down the road?
Here are some common characteristics of backyard breeders:
• Limited Knowledge: Often lack in-depth understanding of genetics, breed standards, and proper animal care.
• Minimal Health Testing: May not conduct thorough health screenings on parent dogs.
• Profit-Driven: Usually motivated by making quick money rather than improving the breed.
• Limited Support: Typically offer little to no support after the puppy is sold.
• Questionable Conditions: May keep dogs in subpar living conditions.
What is an Ethical Breeder?
Ethical breeders, on the other hand, are committed to the health, well-being, and improvement of the breed. Here's what sets them apart:
• Extensive Knowledge: Well-versed in genetics, breed standards, and animal husbandry.
• Comprehensive Health Testing: Conduct thorough health screenings to minimize genetic issues.
• Breed Improvement: Focus on enhancing the breed's qualities, not just producing puppies.
• Lifelong Support: Offer ongoing assistance and often have a return policy if needed.
• Quality Care: Provide excellent living conditions and socialization for their dogs and puppies.
• Limited Breeding: Carefully planned breeding to match to the market demand.
Why Choose an Ethical Breeder?
Choosing an ethical breeder means:
• Healthier Puppies: Reduced risk of genetic health issues.
• Better Temperaments: Well-socialized puppies from carefully selected parents.
• Ongoing Support: A resource for the life of your dog.
• Responsible Practices: Contributing to the overall health and welfare of the breed.
When you choose a puppy from an ethical breeder, you're not just getting a pet – you're getting a healthy, well-adjusted family member, and supporting responsible breeding practices that prioritize the welfare of dogs.
Remember, a good breeder will be just as interested in you as you are in their puppies. They'll want to ensure their puppies are going to loving, prepared homes. So don't be surprised if an ethical breeder asks you as many questions as you ask them!
